How to Water Ferns

Some people prefer ferns to flowering plants because they are much easier to care for. They are just as beautiful as other types of plants, but they do not require the continuous upkeep. Most ferns thrive in a humid environment; therefore they do not require watering on a regular basis.

How to Water Ferns

  1. Choose a potting soil that promotes good drainage. Select a soil that is as close to the fern's natural habitat as possible and this will ensure that you will be able to produce a healthy plant. Ferns thrive in a humid environment and too much water can prevent a fern from rooting properly.

  2. Use your hands to check the moisture of the soil surrounding the fern. If you can feel moisture it is recommended that you wait to water the plant.

  3. Plant the fern over a tray filled with small pebbles and put water on the pebbles instead of on the plant. Putting water directly on the fern can cause it to develop brown spots. The water from the pebbles will evaporate, which will provide the fern with the humidity it needs.

  4. Use a self watering pot to prevent over watering the plant. The watering pot will slowly provide water to the fern. The self watering pots can be purchased at most home supply stores in the gardening supply department.

  5. Never put the plant close to an air conditioner, vents or any other places where there is a steady breeze because they can rob the fern of its moisture.
