How to Wear 1970s Fashion
Whether you are going to a costume party or just like the look of the 1970s, there are many ways you can wear this fashion. While actual clothing from the 1970s can be found by searching thrift stores, you may already have some items in your closet.
- Look for bell-bottom jeans, which were very popular among both men and women in the 1970s. Bell bottom jeans were often decorated with rhinestones or embroidery, and completed with a macrame belt.
- Wear tie-dye or plaid shirts, which were often worn with bell-bottoms during the 1970s. You can purchase tie-dye shirts at many stores, or make them yourself at home. You can also find tie-dye shirts with popular bands from that era on them.
- Look for peasant-style clothing, such as peasant blouses with bell sleeves and long flowing skirts.
- Wear platform shoes, which usually had 2 to 4 inch heels and were very popular in the 1970s.
- Choose accessories that were popular in the 1970s. Some common accessories included flower chokers, headbands tied around the head, leather bracelets and bangle bracelets. Suede bags with fringe were popular as well.
- Choose the right length for skirts and dresses. There were three popular lengths for skirts and dresses in the 1970s, including the mini, midi and maxi. While the mini skirt was very short, the midi skirt or dress came down to the mid calf and the maxi dress came down to the ankles.
- Look for clothes with embroidery or floral prints, both of which were very popular in the 1970s.
- Choose velvet. Velvet pants, blazers and zippered jumpsuits were all popular items of clothing during the 1970s, and they were worn by both men and women.
