How to Wear a Car Passenger Safety Belt

Whenever you ride in a car, most states require you to secure yourself using the vehicle's safety restraints. This is necessary even if you are sitting in the passenger seat and is enforceable by law. While strapping yourself in may seem simple enough, there is a correct way to wear your passenger side safety belt.

  1. Sit in the passenger seat of the car and locate the passenger side buckle. This will be on the side of your seat that is nearest the driver and close to your left hip. This is where you will secure the seat belt.

  2. Grasp the tongue of the seat belt and pull it firmly across your body. The shoulder strap should reach over your right shoulder and across your chest while the lap portion of the seat belt stretches low across your hips,

  3. Insert the tongue into the buckle until you hear it click into place. If you do not hear a click, the seat belt is not safely secured and could come undone in the event of an accident or at any time during your drive.

  4. Give the strap a tug to ensure that it does not move.

  5. Adjust the straps around your hips so that it is snug, but not overly loose or too tight. Check the fit of your shoulder strap to also ensure a good fit. They should not be pressing against your face or your neck. If it does, try sliding your seat either forward or backwards to see if it improves how it fits, or if your vehicle allows adjust the height of the shoulder strap.
