How to Work Out at the Gym

Working out at the gym is a great alternative to home workouts. You get to use top-of-the-line equipment, attend fitness classes and access to thousands of variations to fulfill your workout. However, if you are new to a gym, learning how to use the latest equipment and resources can be intimidating with so many people around.

  1. Ask a gym attendant to teach you how to use the equipment. New equipment can be difficult to use on your own, and you may never discover some innovative features unless someone shows you. This allows you to get the best workout the machine offers.

  2. Balance aerobic exercise with anaerobic activities. For best physical fitness, it is important that you focus both on endurance and strength. Try lifting weights every other day or few times a week, and then dedicating the other days to cardiovascular training.

  3. Enroll in a fitness class if your gym offers them. Yoga, pilates, zumba and spinning classes are all extremely popular. A fitness class introduces you to a new type of exercise, enables you to meet others interested in fitness and get you to the gym. Some people need a little extra motivation to go to the gym, and a scheduled class can provide that. After the class is over, you can work out at your leisure.

  4. Join a sports team through the gym. If you are a football fanatic or soccer junkie, ask if they have any team sports. This can help you stay motivated during your workouts, because you are improving your physical fitness with a goal in mind.

  5. Be considerate of others. Some gyms have 30 minute time limits on machines, which you should follow during peak hours. Try to work in other people between your weight sets if someone else is waiting, and wipe down any equipment when you are done.
