How to Work With an Architect

Building a dream home or custom remodel requires the knowledge and skills of an architect. Architects can adapt standard plans into a dream home or bring design visions to reality. An architect and his client must have a strong working relationship to produce a building plan that meets the needs of the homeowner and is obtainable with the given budget.

  1. Gather your ideas for the new build or remodel. Collect inspiration photos from magazines, books, model homes and the Internet. Decide a general feel for the space or a design you want to incorporate into the project. Set a budget for materials and labor.

  2. Interview several architects before selecting one to hire. He should listen to your ideas and be willing to offer suggestions to make the project fit your desires and budget. Ask questions, talk to references and discuss project timelines.

  3. Discuss unique design needs such as handicap accessibility, wide hallways, non-standard counter heights or dimensions of existing furniture you want to use. Mention specific neighborhood design rules. This applies mainly to historic districts or neighborhoods with strict architectural codes.

  4. Review drawings periodically and request changes if needed. Look at the architect’s material lists. View items in person when available to avoid delays due to last minute changes. Have one or two backup options if an item becomes unavailable when you start the project.

  5. Be creative with choices and design. Architects have specialized training to create functional spaces while complying with building codes. Be open to new ideas that improve on the ones you presented.

  6. Ask you architect for help finding a contractor to perform the work. Architects often work with certain builders and trust them to complete the build successfully. Ask for help negotiating the building contract. Depending on the contract an architect acts as a representative of the homeowner and communicates changes directly to the builder.
