How to Write Graduation Thank You Notes

Graduation is a time of accolades and praises for your achievements. Taking center stage, a graduate is oftentimes given words of praise and gifts. However, when all of the festivities are over, it is important that you thank those who recognized your accomplishments. A simple thank you note can show that you appreciate their thoughts and gifts.

  1. Handwrite the thank you note. This will let the recipient know that you care and took the effort and time of writing by hand rather than quickly typing out mass thank you notes. Emailed thank yous are considered tacky; use snail mail or hand deliver to those who mean the most to you.

  2. Give specific thanks. If a gift was given, be sure to specify why you liked the gift or what you plan on doing with it. If the person you are thanking did not give a gift but instead came to your graduation ceremony or a party, mention how much it means to you that they were present.

  3. Don’t mention a specific amount of money if cash was given to you as a gift. This is considered tacky by most. Instead, just thank them for the generous gift.

  4. Don’t forget those people who had a special influence on you during your journey to graduation. Even if they didn’t get you a gift or attend any celebratory events, let teachers, mentors, friends, and family members know that they helped you immensely.

  5. Proofread your thank you note to check your spelling and grammar. A poorly written thank you will leave the recipient wondering if you are indeed truly thankful.
