How to Write KSAs for Government Jobs

The government is notoriously picky when it comes to hiring employees. Applicants are often required to write a KSA when applying for a government job. KSA stands for Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. It is designed to be a summary of your qualifications and eligibility for a particular job. Care should be taken when developing your KSA.

  1. Consider your background, skills and experience. Create a list of the important knowledge, skills and abilities that you posses. The initial list should be short and to the point. This will be used to help you create your official KSA and expand on your job qualifications.

  2. Choose the right words. Review the job posting and ensure that the words that you are using in your KSA meet the qualifications and requirements that are included in the job posting. Scan other job postings that are similar to yours and create a broad list of important keywords to be used in your KSA.

  3. Determine which knowledge, skills and abilities are most important to the job in question. These are often the skills and experience that are listed as minimum job qualifications in the posting. These skills and abilities should appear at the top of your KSA. Create a list and begin with the most important knowledge, skill or ability and work your way down to those that are least relevant to the position.

  4. Provide examples, but keep it short. Feel free to show the government a couple of ways in which you have used the skills listed on your KSA in order to be successful in your previous positions, but be concise and to the point.
