How to Write Suitable Headlines for Newspaper Articles
The headline of a newspaper article is just as important as the article itself. Without a catchy headline to draw the reader in, the article might not get read at all. Choosing catchy words and statements that will grab the reader and pull them in are a great way to write a headline for a newspaper article.
- Include the use of superlatives when writing an article headline. A superlative provides measurements of the greatest degree such as best, worst, most popular or most hated. The use of superlatives will catch the reader’s attention and draw them in to read the article.
- Create a title that is short, sweet and to-the-point. Long and wordy titles will lose the reader’s interest. Summarize what the article is about in a single sentence that is direct and to-the-point. Avoid using filler words; instead, use keywords and buzz words to capture the appropriate audience and pull them in.
- Consider the culture of the target audience that the article is being targeted to. Use words that are appropriate for this audience by including words that are commonly used within the target culture.
- Incorporate lists and numbers into a title; these types of titles are popular with readers. For example, the 10 best or 10 worst things to do on a date. Article headlines that contain top lists are a great attention grabber.
- Make sure that the title correctly represents the information contained within the article. For example, you cannot use the "Top 10 Diet Foods" unless this information is going to be within the body of the article.
