How to Write a Cover Letter for Teacher Employment
Writing a cover letter is an important part of applying for a job. When pursuing a teaching position, a cover letter should address the person to whom you would like the resume to go to as well as pertinent information about the teaching and educational experience that you have within the field in which you are applying.
- Format a cover letter in business format. This means that each paragraph within the cover letter should be indented 5 spaces as well as include a personalized greeting to help give the cover letter a personal touch.
- Address the cover letter for teacher employment to a specific person within the department for which you are applying. For example, if you are applying for a teacher position in the field of history at a college, you should address the letter to the head of the history department. If you are applying for an elementary school teaching position, the letter should be addressed to the superintendent of the school district or the principal of the school.
- Include a personalized greeting using the name of the person whom you are sending the cover letter to. This greeting can include "Hello" or "Greetings" along with the name of the person. For example, “Hello Mr. Jackson,” or “Greetings Dr. Phillips.” This gives the cover letter a personal touch.
- Keep the cover letter short and sweet. A cover letter should not be more than 1 page in length. The purpose of a cover letter is to summarize your knowledge and expertise in the field in which you are applying.
- Close the letter with contact information where you can be contacted. Include full name, email address and phone number in the closing of a teacher employment cover letter.
