How to Write a Motor Insurance Claim

There are times that you may be required to write an insurance claim letter for a car accident. Generally this claim letter contains information for the damages that you and your vehicle received. If this is your first time writing a claim letter it can seem a bit overwhelming. It is actually not that difficult to write a motor insurance claim letter, and only takes a short time to do.


  1. Keep the format of your claim easy and simple to read. The format of your insurance claim letter should be formal. In the body of your letter include no more than about two to four paragraphs that are easy to understand. Avoid using difficult phrases or wording when your write your letter. Make sure to use polite and courteous language, but at the same time be firm and stern with your demand.

  2. Explain who, what, when, why and where in your claim letter. This information should be particular to the accident and damages that you have incurred as a result of the accident. Describe the events of the accident as portrayed in the police report, but keep it short and to the point. Make sure to attach a copy of the police report to this letter.

  3. Reference verifiable amounts and expenses of damages that you have incurred. Include any estimates you received to repair your vehicle, and any amount of reasonable medical expenses you expect you may incur in the future. Include a detailed description of any treatments and diagnosis you have received pertaining to the accident.

  4. Set a deadline with the car insurance company when you want to get a response by. Tell the insurance company straightforward that you need a reply by a certain date. Inform the insurance company you will not wait forever to get a timely and fair settlement for your claim.
