How to Write a Repair Manual
Writing a repair manual is much more than just writing down basic information about each repair. You need to write in a way that is easy to understand and also provides a visual picture with words. Sometimes this involves interviewing several experts and including diagrams and pictures.
Start With the Basics
You first need to introduce each repair with the basic information. This will lay the groundwork for more complex instructions later. Explain the major components of each repair and why they're important. For example, if you were writing about how to change a tire, you would first explain what tools you need. If you started by saying jack the vehicle up and take the tire off with a wheel wrench, some people might not understand what a jack is or a wheel wrench is.
Write While Working
Start writing specific instructions after you've explained every tool and part needed in the repair. An easy way of including every possible detail is to actually perform the repair as you write. Stop and include every little detail about each step of the process. Details about changing a tire would include making sure the jack is placed under the frame of the vehicle so it stays stable as you're jacking it up off the ground. You would probably miss some important details if you just sat down and started writing. Another way you could do this would be having someone else perform the repair and you write while observing.
