How to Write a Resumé for Student Employment
Writing a resumé as a student may seem like an overwhelming project. By following a few simple tips, you can put together a professional resumé that will help you find employment. List any work, volunteer or internship experience, as well as special skills.
Marketing yourself for employment opportunities without any work experience can be a challenge. There are several ways to write a resumé which can help you stand out.
1. Research current job openings in the field you'd like to enter. What are employers looking for? This is important to know so you can use similar terminology whenever possible when writing your resumé.
2. Brainstorm strengths, including computer skills, education, training, certifications, work experience (including volunteer or unpaid positions), personal characteristics and accomplishments.
3. Find a resumé template. Most word processing programs have them. Look for a design that is easy to read with a professional appearance.
4. Fill in the resumé template with your own information. Use the list of strengths you brainstormed to highlight your potential as a strong candidate for employment. Don't include hobbies or achievements unless they are related to your career goals. For example, if you are hoping to become employed as a computer programmer, prospective employers won't care that you are a ping-pong champion, but they will care that the video game you created won a contest.
5. Have someone you trust read and edit your resumé. Consider asking for references from a professor or other mentor to provide credibility.
