How to Write an Interior Design Concept Statement

Interior Design

Writing an interior design concept statement helps communicate the design purpose. It sets forth the idea of the design by using words and/or graphics. It uses descriptive language and visual tools to plant an image in the client’s mind of what the design portrays.

requirements of the design
  1. Describe where the inspiration from the design came from. For example, if the design is for a “jungle themed” baby’s' nursery, the inspiration might have been drawn from Walt Disney’s' “The Jungle Book.” By using inspiration for the room, murals can depict scenes. Familiar colors from the movie appear in paints, fabrics and furniture. Even quotes from the characters find their way to the walls.
  2. Define the specifications or requirements of the design. Explain the color scheme, furniture choice and layout, fabric choices and application, wallpaper or paint, the flooring and hardware and fixtures needed to complete the room's design concept.
  3. Use visuals to aid the client in the visualizing the design. Produce concept boards that include fabric, wallpaper, flooring and paint samples. Pictures of furniture, accessories and hardware should also be included, along with schematic drawings of floor plans and interior elevations showing placement.

  4. Incorporate descriptive language to bring your design to life in the client's mind. Draw them in by describing how each element used in the design enhances every aspect of the concept. Instead of saying, “the wall color is green” say “the wall color mimics the lush green vegetation that is found in the jungle's natural surroundings.”
