How to Write an Invitation

Learning how to write an invitation can benefit you in a number of ways. You can choose which invite style you want to use once you know what type of event you're hosting. Different type of invites include corporate, formal and casual. These days, you can write and design invitations in multiple ways such as writing the invite out by hand or typing it up.

Invitation Details

  1. Figure out what type of celebration you're throwing. Writing casual invitations differs from how you would pen a formal affair. Write out the complete date and address on formal invites. Exclude the zip code unless you're expecting an RSVP reply. Employ third person grammar throughout this type of invitation. You can add in numbered dates for casual invites. Corporate invites need short and to the point lettering and memo style writing.

  2. Add who the invitation is for. Write in the name of that person. Place your name at the bottom of the invite if you're the host and not the event's honoree.

  3. Include what type of event you plan to have. Label the event you're holding. Different types of functions that may require an invitation include baby showers, birthdays, weddings, retirement parties and milestone anniversaries.

  4. List when you plan to hold the event. Include the date on the invitation.

  5. State where the event will take place in your invitation. Take another sheet of paper with a map on it and tuck it into your invite. Pocket invitations work well if you need to include directions to your party.

  6. Include why you wish to hold the function. You can list the reason why the event will take place if the party involves uniqueness such as a “welcome home baby” or “consoling a friend after a hard breakup.”
