How to do Concrete Block Construction for Walls

Concrete blocks are often used to help construct walls for a buildings foundation. Constructing these walls will involve a lot of manual labor and special tools. It's very important to plan ahead before you start building walls with concrete blocks. This is a major project that requires a lot of time.

Things You'll Need:

  • Wooden Steaks

  • Wheel Tape Measure

  • Shovel

  • Level

  • Concrete

  • Masonry Trowel

  • Hammer

  • Concrete Blocks

  • Ladder

  1. Mark the area where you want to build the walls with wooden stakes. These steaks should be easy to hammer into the ground. Make sure you measure the area with a wheel tape measure so you know the dimensions are accurate.

  2. Dig a trench where you want the wall to be constructed with a shovel. Make sure you dig the trench about four inches longer and wider than you plan on making the actual wall. Use a level to make sure the footer is straight.

  3. Pour concrete in the trench to complete the footer. Make sure you use a masonry trowel and level to make the trench straight. Allow at least one day for the trench to harden before you continue the project.

  4. Attach the concrete blocks to the footer and other blocks with cement mortar. Use a level, hammer and masonry trowel to make each block straight. You need to make sure each block is straight so the wall doesn't slope in different directions. Use a ladder once the wall becomes too high for you to reach while standing on the ground.
