Ideas on High School Jobs

While in high school, many students may find themselves with the need for more cash.  The demand for a more popular wardrobe, extra money for outings with friends and car insurance and gas can quickly add up to a large bill for you.  However, there are many jobs that students can find while still in high school to provide a steady income.

Babysitting

Babysitting is a great choice for high school students who have not reached the legal age to work.  Many parents will hire someone as young as 12 or 13 if they feel they are responsible and have experience.  The drawbacks of babysitting, however, are that the parents have no legal obligation to pay you a certain amount and you will most likely be working on Friday or Saturday nights.  On the other hand, you will probably not be taxed on the money you make.

Food Service

Lots of teenagers work in food service because it is extremely easy to get hired on as a food service worker.  Turnover is generally very rapid, so there are always openings coming available.  Most food establishments are flexible with student’s schedules and pay minimum wage.  In some places of employment, you can collect tips, adding to your base pay.

Career Advancement

Some high school students take the opportunity to find a job during high school that will help them succeed in their careers.  Veterinary kennel positions are great for those interested in veterinary science while working at a summer camp can provide experience with children for those interested in teaching.  These jobs can be used on college or job applications, making you more marketable for the field.
