The History of Communication Technology

Importance of Communication Technology

The term communication technology, also known as information technology, can be simply defined as electronic devices and networks used for purposes of conveying information. This technology has a broad range of applications across every area of society as most people need to communicate for one reason or another.

Many of the dramatic changes that have happened in human society over the last century and a half have happened largely as a result of advances in communication technology. Radio and television have changed the way that people see the world and themselves, allowing more information to be transmitted than any form of media prior to their advent.

Business Landscape

Communication technology has long been an essential part of the business landscape. It began with the basic telegraph and now there are devices available that allow a wide range of business-related tasks to be completed using mobile networks. In between these two technological revolutions, there have been a wide range of communication devices including telexes and fax machines. The new efficiency in communications has led to increased productivity in most industries. It serves as a means of handling business transactions, providing data for decision-making, as well as an avenue for promoting a particular product or service.

Social Aspects

The social aspects of many people’s lives have been revolutionized by communication technology in much the same way that the business world has. People keep in touch with their friends and family, and make new connections via the Internet as well.

Communication technology has been used to organize everything from protests against oppressive governments to humanitarian relief efforts in places where disasters have occurred. It has proven invaluable in situations where resources have to be coordinated and where circumstances are constantly changing. It can also be used to publicize the plight of refugees and other oppressed people, thereby drawing the attention of the world to a particular situation.
