Information on Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is something that the government feels is important to every family. This is why they strive to make sure that affordable housing is accessible to everyone. This affordable housing is called HUD. Because there are so many people looking for affordable housing and not enough places available, sometimes there is a long waiting list that can be as long as five years.

According to the government, affordable housing is anything that is less than 30% of a family's annual income. Unfortunately, there are not many families that are able to find housing that is within this range. Over twelve million people in the United States are paying more than 50% of their annual income on housing, making it nearly impossible for them to afford food, medical expenses and clothing. In America, a family with one full time, minimum wage income cannot afford a fair-market two-bedroom apartment without stretching costs. Low-income families have an especially hard time finding affordable housing, which is one reason why so many people are living in multiple family homes to help them save on costs.

HUD is the housing authority of America. Their mission is to increase the amount of affordable housing for low-income families so that everyone can afford to live in their own home. Because so many people apply to HUD for housing grants and other assistance, the waiting list to receive affordable housing can be upwards of five years or longer. Each state has their own guidelines as far as what you must do to get affordable housing, but each state will give housing assistance to those that need it.
