Information on the Chevrolet Caprice

The Chevrolet Caprice was a full-size car manufactured by General Motors from 1965 to 1996. It was the most popular car in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Chevrolet Caprice was available in a full range of styles, including a coupe and a station wagon.

First Generation

The first generation of the Chevrolet Caprice included the 1965 through 1970 model years. This model was a luxury trim level of the Impala four-door sedan. The Caprice had stronger suspension and upgraded upholstery from the Impala. It also had walnut trim and additional interior lights. This version of the Chevrolet Caprice also had an option for a vinyl roof.

Second Generation

The second generation of this car was in production from 1971 to 1976. This generation represented a complete redesign with a longer wheelbase and fuselage styling. Flush-mounted door handles and double-shell roofs were new features for 1971 Caprice. The second-generation Caprice featured an egg crate grille similar to those found on Cadillacs at the time.

Third Generation

The third generation of the Chevrolet Caprice included models made from 1977 to 1990. This version was much smaller because of the energy crisis in the early 1970s. The wheelbase for the coupes and sedans was 10 inches shorter and weighed more than 600 pounds less than the previous generation of the Chevrolet Caprice.

Fourth Generation

The fourth generation of the Chevrolet Caprice was in production from 1991 to 1996. The rectilinear design of the third generation was completely restyled with a more rounded design. A new feature on this version of the Chevrolet Caprice included an antilock braking system.
