Installing Central Air Cleaner
Most people don't understand the importance of changing their air filters. The filters help keep dust and other debris from entering your house through your air conditioner. You should change your filter at minimum once every three months. People who have pets or allergies should consider changing their filter more frequently.
- Check what size air filter you need before purchasing a new one. The sizes will vary and can be seen in either your central air manual or by checking the existing air filter. Check an old air filter or ask the property manager if you live in an apartment. You probably won't have access to the air conditioners manual if you’re renting.
- Purchase a new air cleaner at a local home care store. Pay attention to the prices because there will probably be different types of filters than can get very expensive. Some air filters are more powerful and might be needed if you live in a dusty area. Talk with an expert at the store and discuss with them about what type of filter to buy for your residential area.
- Turn off your air conditioner or heater before removing the old filter. Installing the new filter with the air conditioner or heater on will be difficult and could cause a lot of dust to enter quickly. It shouldn't take long for your central air unit to shut completely off.
- Remove the access door to the filter. Access doors will vary in how they are removed. Some might have screws while other just pop in and out.
- Remove the old air filter and dispose it in the garbage, preferably outside. You don't want all the dust flying inside your house or apartment.
- Install the new filter, but first look for arrows pointing in the direction you should install it. There is a right and a wrong way to install a filter. Consider writing the date on the new filter with a marker so you know how long it's been since you've replaced it.
