Instructions for Aluminum Window Installation

Aluminum windows are lightweight, yet extremely durable. They are a popular choice for those who want to replace older windows to a newer, more efficient style. You can install your aluminum windows yourself with a little know-how and a few tools.

Items you’ll need:

  • Aluminum window

  • Window hardware

  • Screwdriver

  • Box cutter

  • Caulk

  • Shims

  • Hammer

  • Nails

  • Level

  1. Remove the old, inefficient window. This means that you will need to use your box cutter, making an incision in the caulk completely around the window. Once the seal is broken, you can use a screwdriver to gain leverage while removing the window. Use care not to damage the window casing. Once the window is removed, clean the window casing, ensuring that there are no nails or leftover caulk.

  2. Install the new aluminum window hardware inside the window casing. This hardware will help keep the window in place, giving it a nice fit in the case. Use your screwdriver and hammer, making sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

  3. Place the new window in the casing on top of wooden shims, making sure that it is plumb with the wall. If it is not plumb, it will not install properly. Take your caulking and caulk all the way around the window, leaving gaps only where the shims are located. Once the caulk dries, remove the shims and caulk the area where they were. When it dries, your new window should be completely weather sealed from the elements.
