Soap can be easily made from your home and is perfect for your use or as a special gift. Soap making is also a fun activity for families or children to do together. Although the process is simple, the entire soap making activity takes a couple of days, as soap needs time to cool down and mold to its desired shape. With the right supplies and ample amount of time, soap can easily be created right from your home.

What You Need:

  • Water

  • Lye

  • Lard

  • Coconut oil

  • Olive oil

  • Scale

  • Stainless steel pot

  • Large plastic container with lid

  • Thermometer

  • Spoon

  • Plastic molds

  • Goggles

  • Rubber gloves

  • Fragrance (optional)

  • Coloring dye (optional)

  1. Place the container on the scale, and add three parts water and one part lye. Make sure to mix in an open area because the fumes of lye mixed with water can be dangerous. Let cool for several hours and store at room temperature.

  2. Add the same amount of lard to the mixture that you did water and the same amount of coconut and olive oil that you did lye. Pour in stainless steel container. Heat the mixture on the stove until everything has blended together. Stir gently.

  3. Continue heating until the mixture has reached around 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Check with thermometer.

  4. Add the lye and water mixture to the oil mixture. Stir well with a spoon for several minutes. The mixture will become thick and opaque. Add fragrance and coloring dye if desired. Stir until blended completely.

  5. Pour the mixture into a plastic mold right away, the mold can be fun shaped or as simple as a plastic Tupperware container. Let cool for at least 24 hours until the soap has cooled to room temperature.

  6. Remove soap from the molds, they should come out easily. If you want to speed this process up then, freeze the soap for a few hours and then dislodge from the mold.
