Instructions for Using 3M Window Insulation Tape
Saving energy is important to help maintain our resources. Heating and cooling our homes is one energy usage that can offer unique problems in saving energy. One of those problems is insulating the home, especially the areas that allow air to escape or to enter such as the frame of a window or door jam. Now, Scotch has developed a good solution to this problem, the 3M window insulation tape.
Items Needed:
- 3M window insulation kit
- Hair dryer
- Utility knife
- Measuring tape (optional)
- Remove the double-sided tape from the kit. It typically comes in a small roll.
- Determine the length of the widow side you will first apply your tape. You can measure with a measuring tape or you can simply unroll the sticky tape and cut it to fit the side of the window you are currently working on.
- Start at the highest side of the window. Carefully remove the peel off covering of the sticky tape and stick to the area you have chosen on the window frame. Remember that this adhesive is a one-time usage and you must make sure to place it correctly the first time.
- Place tape on all four sides of the window. Check to make sure that the adhesive is adhering and there is a good solid connection to the window frame.
- Trim the corners carefully. Make sure there are no gaps between the tape joints at the corners of the windows.
- Remove the other side of the adhesive tape that is on the window frame. The insulation membrane will attach to this side.
- Stretch the insulation membrane in place over the window and from tape to tape.
- Press membrane into place against the sticky tape.
- Trim excess membrane using the utility knife.
- Use the heat of the hair dryer to shrink the membrane to make it more form fitting to the window.
