Iron Fence Design Ideas
Iron fencing is some of the most remarkable fencing that a homeowner could install on a property. Metal fencing has the ability to be manipulated into intricate designs that can complement the design of any home and landscaping, thus increasing curb-appeal as well as enhancing security.
Traditional
Traditional wrought-iron fencing consists of vertical bars held in parallel by a horizontal bar near the top and bottom of the fence. The top of the fence is tipped with points that are all at the same level or dip and then rise to create a wave effect throughout the length of the fence. The traditional form of iron fencing is most often paired with Victorian homes.
Ornate
Metal working makes it easy to create highly decorative and intricate iron fencing. Swirls and twirls that resemble growing vines, called arabesque, are common on highly ornate iron fencing. Ornate iron fencing looks most at home with Baroque-inspired, or highly decorative, design.
Modern
Modern-looking iron fencing uses geometric patterns and negative space to create an iron fence that is attractive and complementary to homes with a modern design. Instead of using vertical bars to define a space, modern iron fences might be made of a sheet of metal with designs cut out of the metal to retain the sightline through the fence.
Abstract
An abstract iron fence looks like a mass of metal that lacks any symmetry or defined shape, but is nonetheless pleasing to the eye. The metal still connects to form a solid barrier that is still sturdy. Abstract fencing best fits with modern and contemporary styled homes.
Natural
Iron fencing that has been wrought to resemble elements of nature has a crafty, whimsical feel. Examples of natural-looking iron fencing would be fencing that looks like an arbor with a metal vine growing up it, an outline of dog waiting at the fence or a row of trees complete with birds and nests all made from metal. Iron fencing of this nature looks the best with cottages, bungalows and homes built in the Arts and Crafts style.
