Job Security Tips for Customer Service Professionals

Providing good customer service is a key way to secure a job position.  Every employer wants an employee that makes the customer feel welcome and valued, as it is the customer who bring in the business.  A few simple tips should place you at the top of the customer service heap.

Providing excellent customer service is easy, you just need a good attitude and a willingness to learn about your job.  When a customer comes into an establishment, the last thing they want is an unhelpful, unfriendly and grouchy employee.  It sets the tone for the entire transaction and makes an impression of the establishment.

  • Learn the basics about the company you work for.  No one is expected to know everything, but having a basic knowledge of where things are located or how things work can help you in assisting the customer.

  • Smile until your face hurts.  Even if you are having a bad day, save it.  If you smile long enough, some good feelings might rub off whether you want or not.  A customer responds to a smile, even if you don’t have the correct answer for them.

  • Get help if you can’t take care of a problem.  Do not refer to it being someone else’s job or say that you are too busy.  You are never too busy to provide customer service when asked and if you can’t answer the customer’s question, find someone who can, even if you have to find a member of management. Apologize to the customer for your lack of knowledge and take care of the problem as best you can.

  • Do not respond in a negative manner, even if you are screamed at by an irate and crazy person.  No matter the circumstance, your responsibility is to remain calm, polite and helpful, even under trying situations.
