LED Television Facts

LED televisions are not to be confused with the popular LCD television. An LED TV uses a series of backlights instead of the bright florescent lights that LCDs use. The picture is known to be sharper and clearer, making LEDs great for HD use.

LED Technology

The backlighting of an LED television set is called edge lighting. These lights are placed on the edges inside of the TV to produce a clearer picture. The light is disbanded throughout the screen evenly. LCD TVs also have this type of lighting, although the lights are much brighter. An exclusive LED television has full array lighting, which means that there are lights in placed in the backing of the TV. It has a dimming function that will turn off a few sets of lights depending on the light inside of the room. This produces the picture on the screen to either be brighter or darker.

LED vs. LCD

LED televisions have many pros against a standard LCD. They have lower power consumption since they don’t use florescent lighting. Their color saturation is improved and there don’t use any mercury radiation in their lights, which can be harmful over time. The full array back lighting can be helpful in a room where the sun is shining through since a few lights will detect it and turn themselves off.

Cons of LED TVs

Being close to a LED television set make the picture appear a bit distorted. This is because the TV is made for viewing at a farther away distance. They also might not be very user friendly because of their many settings and functions that they are able to do. LED TVs are also much more expensive that LCD and plasma television sets.
