List of Drain Openers

Drains can often become clogged over time due to food particles, hair and other debris that have built up in the drainage pipes in your home. This leads to plumbing problems such as a slow moving drain, or a blocked drain that does not drain at all. Do not worry; there are many different drain opener options that are available for you to use at home on your own that do not require hiring an expensive plumber.

  • Commercial Drain Cleaners - There are many different bands of commercial drain cleaners on the market to choose from. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions when using these products. Always use protective gear when working with commercial drain cleaners because they contain harsh chemicals that can be dangerous. Safety goggles and rubber gloves should be used when working with these cleaners.

  • Vinegar & Baking Soda - A great all natural alternative to commercial cleaners is vinegar and baking soda. Add three-quarters of a cup of dry baking soda into your clogged drain, and then immediately add two cups of any type of vinegar. Plug the drain with a drain plug or wet rag to keep the chemical combustion inside of your drain. Allow the mixture to work at unclogging your drain for thirty minutes before removing the plug and checking the drain. Run the hot water to wash the debris from your pipes.

  • Salt - Table salt is often able to remove clogs from your drain. Boil a pot of water and then remove the pot from the heat source. Add one cup of table salt into your boiling water and allow it to thoroughly dissolve. Pour the salt water mixture into your drain and allow it to sit overnight. Flush your drain with hot water in the morning to wash out the remaining dirt and debris.

  • Cola - Most brands of cola on the market contain phosphoric acid which is a great chemical for clearing blocked drains. Add a two liter bottle of cola into your clogged rain, and then block off the drain with a drain cover or wet rag. Check the drain in the morning to see if it is clear. If the drain is still running slowly you can repeat the process as needed.
