Managing the IT Help Desk
A well operated IT help desk is very important to any organization. Businesses need to train their employees on how they want the help desk managed. The IT help desk needs to be operated efficiently, as it helps keep the entire business stay productive.
- Determine how many help desk employees you need based on how many other employees you have. You don't want one employee handling all the IT problems if you have a lot of employees and computers. You also wouldn't want several help desk employees handling only a few employees’ computer problems. Start with the ratio of one help desk representative for 50 employees and expand from there if you need.
- Hire help desk representatives that have a wide range of knowledge. You don't want your help desk representatives to be one-dimensional. Having versatile help desk representatives will allow you to keep your amount of employees low.
- Have the help desk representatives make a list of common questions and answers. This will allow the representatives to only troubleshoot more complicated problems. The list of common questions and answers will allow the other employees to fix easy problems themselves.
- Schedule the help desk employees during times when the most problems could occur. Having a help desk employee sit around at night when only a few employees are working might not be worth your time and money. They could easily come in at night if an emergency came up. Make sure they're only scheduled when they're needed the most.
