How to Kill Mold Growth in Your Home

Mold Detection and Removal

Mold can cause anyone who is susceptible to the effects of mold spores to become ill with allergy-like symptoms such as breathing problems, coughing, sneezing and itchy watery eyes. If someone in your home has been experiencing these symptoms you should find and remove any mold that is in your home.

  • Mold can sometimes be hidden behind the walls or in areas that you cannot easily spot. You should check for mold in areas where you notice a musty smell. This is usually the first thing that you will notice. That musty smell that is commonly associated with a basement is the smell of mold formation.

  • If you cannot find the source of the mold on your own it may be under the flooring or inside of the walls. Before tearing up the floor or walls it is best to call a mold remediation specialist to assist you in finding the source of the mold in your home.

  • Before removing and treating any mold, you must first determine the source of the water that has caused the mold to form. If you do not fix the problem, the mold will just return right away due to the moisture that is allowed to form without proper ventilation.

  • Mold that has formed on surfaces that you can see can easily be removed with a homemade cleaning solution that consists of equal parts of water and bleach. Spray down any hard surfaces that mold has formed on, and allow the bleach to sit for five minutes before wiping the area clean.

  • Mold that has formed on clothing and other fabrics can easily be treated using vinegar. Simply add 1 cup of vinegar to a small load of laundry that has mold on it and run the washing machine on the heavy soil cycle. Wash the clothes one more time after the washing cycle has finished using the normal amount of laundry soap and fabric softener to remove the smell of the vinegar.
