Most Important Factors to Consider When Ending a Life Insurance Policy as a Senior

As a senior, you may experience unexpected expenses. These expenses could be due to health issues or surgeries among many other possibilities. In light of these expenses, you may opt to end your life insurance policy instead of entering into a loan contract. Here are the most important factors to consider when ending a life insurance policy.

First, weigh the cash out value against the face value of the life insurance policy. Considering the number of years you have paid toward this policy, will you receive a satisfactory amount should you cash it out? It is not beneficial to you nor is it cost effective, if you will not receive an amount that is near the face value of the policy. Sadly, being offered a much lower cash out amount over the actual face value of the policy is a harsh reality.

Although most insurance carriers will not inform you of this, you do have other options. In the event, that your life insurance carrier offers this much lower cash out value, you can instead take out a loan against the policy. With this option, you can borrow the amount you actually need without exceeding the face value of the policy. You are then required to pay small payments to the life insurance carrier, until the loan is repaid. In choosing this option, your loved ones still have the ability to use the policy should you pass away. Any existing loan balance is then deducted from the face value of the policy.

Consider also the amount of coverage you have and whether you have a backup policy. If you cash out your life insurance policy without additional policies, you run the risk of leaving your loved ones with the cost of your final expenses. Consider these costs based on the amount of additional coverage you have, before cashing out your life insurance policies.
