Reasons for Stump Grinding

Mount Royal Plum Tree Maintenance

The Mount Royal plum tree is a small shrub-like specimen that produces fragrant white blossoms in spring. Often used in urban and edible landscaping, this species requires proper maintenance in order to maintain its shape and produce an abundant crop.

Things needed:

  1. Garden hose with spray attachment

  2. 10-10-10 fertilizer

  3. Organic matter such as manure or compost

  4. Pruning shears

1. Give the tree plenty of water, especially during the summer months. Make sure the entire drip line is thoroughly moistened when doing so. The tree should ideally be watered every 3 or 4 days or as often as needed to maintain moist soil.

2. Add a 10-10-10 fertilizer to the area around the tree in mid-summer. Follow the manufacturer's directions when determining the amount to add to the soil. Do not allow the fertilizer to come in contact with the tree's roots, as this could burn them.

3. Add organic matter such as manure or compost to the ground in a three to four foot diameter section around the plant's base. Work the matter into the soil with a garden rake. If desired, a thick layer of mulch can be added to help with moisture and weed control.

4. Prune the tree in the fall after the leaves are shed. Remove any diseased or dead branches and trim leader branches to help the tree maintain its shape. You should also remove any branches that are growing inward, as this can limit the amount of fruit the tree is able to bear.
