Multicultural Art and Crafts for Kids
Doing multicultural arts and crafts with kids is a great way for kids to learn about and embrace other cultures. These projects are simple and fun to make. It is great to do these projects as a group, as this will help promote kindness and respect for one another.
Instruments
Kids can create instruments from around the world for a fun multicultural craft. Try having them decorate clean salad dressing bottles with tissue paper and glitter. Fill the bottles with dried beans or rice to make maracas from Mexico. To make African drums, attach paper cups with glue and use masking tape to cover the tops.
Aboriginal Dot Drawings
Have kids make Aboriginal dot drawings from Australia for a fun craft. Start by drawing shapes all over a piece of paper. Have them draw the shapes smaller and smaller inside the original shapes. When the paper is covered with shapes, have them fill the lines inside the shapes with dots. They can do this with markers or chalk. They can also dip cotton swabs in paint for a fun way to make dots inside their drawings.
Papel Picado
Have kids make a traditional craft from Mexico called papel picado, which is paper cutting. Start by cutting squares from different colors of tissue paper. Have kids take one square and fold it from one corner to the other to make a triangle. Have them fold it several more times until they have a small triangle. Have them cut designs from the edges of the paper, and then unfold the paper to see the unique designs they have created. They can hang them up by folding the edge over a piece of string or ribbon and taping it.
