Newspaper Jobs for Teens

Many teenagers choose to work a newspaper job in order to get experience in journalism or to earn some extra money. Some newspaper jobs for teens include a paper route, contributing to a community newsletter or working on the school newspaper.

Paper Route

A paper route is one of the most popular newspaper jobs for teens. This job involves picking up the newspaper and delivering it to subscribers, usually very early in the morning. A teen who chooses this job can deliver the papers while riding their bike or by car, if they are old enough to drive. Paper routes generally pay per paper delivered, so the more subscribers on your route, the more money you can make with a paper route.

Contributing to a Community Newsletters

Many community newsletters will allow teens to submit freelance articles. Community newsletters might prefer for teens to submit articles related to their school, teen events in the area or news items that affect teens specifically. Some community newsletters pay a flat rate for articles and some choose to pay per word. However, some community newsletters are run by volunteers and simply offer their teen contributors a byline in the newsletter.

School Newspaper

School newspapers do not pay the students who write and edit for them. However, this is still a valuable newspaper job for teens. Most school papers are run completely by students, with a faculty adviser who supervisors. Teens can get experience pitching stories, reporting stories and even editing. This experience may come in handy for a teen who is interested in a career in newspapers in the future.
