Nursing Critical Care Problems

Critical care nurses have many challenges, because patient care is much more complex than in the past. Critical care nurses are specially trained and professional, and they work with patients with severe disabilities and conditions. A licensed critical care nurse helps patients who are unstable and have complex medical needs. There are many problems that do arise with the critical care nurse.

Problems

The critical care nursing field has many problems but the most significant is the lack of nurses in the specialty field. The Association of critical care nurses or (AACN) have reported a large volume of requests for temporary and traveling nurses to fill staffing needs across the United States.

Critical Care

In a study across the United States showed critical care patients are more seriously ill than once thought, according to the AACN, the patient's in the past would be in intensive care and are now on regular floors. Patients in critical care are extremely lucky because, in the past, they would not have survived. The problems that may arise are accidents and breathing problems.

Technology

A critical care nurse needs to be up to date with technology in the medical field, work with severely disturbed patients and be understanding to both families and patients emotional well-being. The response to a patient's needs is complicated because many patients cannot communicate well with their caregivers. Problems that may arise are complications from surgery and the infections.

High-tech monitoring

Intensive and critical care involves the need for high-tech monitoring systems. Nurses who work with critical patients are versed in telemetry. Telemetry is an extremely complicated computerized monitoring system, which transmits valuable information involving the condition of the patients, lung and heart activity. This system is vital because nurses will make health care judgments based on this information. If the monitoring system fails and produces incorrect information, it can be fatal to the patient.
