Organic Garden Pest Control Tips
There are many organic garden pest control tips a gardener could employ to help keep his garden safe from pesticides and still rid the garden of the pesky bugs. Many of the organic tips include items found in the kitchen or use a combination of other bugs and flowers to deter the more harmful insects.
Many homeowners are gardening to save money but are also finding it difficult to win the war against pest when it comes to destructive insects and worms eating what a gardener wants to save for his family. Organic garden pest control tips will help a gardener take care of the tender plants without harsh chemicals and save money in the process.
Plastic Cups or Long Cylindrical Container
Cut the bottom out of a plastic cup or another type of taller cylindrical container. Place this around small plants so that the plant will grow up through the opening. This will serve to keep cutworms from climbing on the bottom of the plants and cutting down the plant at the base.
Tuna Can
Plant a tuna can or something similar in the ground near your plants. The cans need to be flush with the dirt. Then fill them about two to three inches with beer. The slugs, snails and random bugs will smell the beer and make their way to it and fall in and drown. Be sure to check the cans every day or two to empty them and refill them especially if you have a problem with snails and slugs.
Water and Dish Soap
Take a clean squirt bottle and fill it with 2/3rds water and 1/3rd dish soap. Spray the plants in the garden to rid them of various mites and aphids. Be sure to spray the plants fairly well and on the undersides of the leaves. This should be done every few days.
Vegetable Oil
Vegetable oil will work as well as the dish soap. Some people prefer the vegetable oil because it is not a chemical in any way. This method takes much less with only about three teaspoons in a squirt bottle with warm water.
Marigolds
Many gardeners will plant a few rows of marigolds around their garden to keep insects and small pests such as rabbits out of their gardens. Rabbits do not like the smell of marigolds and neither do some bugs. The fresh fragrance and beautiful colors will help to brighten up your garden as well as deter invaders that wish to steal your produce.
