Price of Various Gutter Types Available

Gutters are found at the base of a roof around a house. They collect rainwater that runs off the roof and redirects it away from the foundation of the home. Rainwater can cause deterioration, cracks and leaks over time. There are many different types of gutters including wood, vinyl, steel, aluminum and copper. The materials used determine the price of the gutters.

Wood Gutters require a great deal of maintenance and are not recommended by home builders. They are only used for restoration projects because they create an authentic look to historical and vintage homes.  Wooden gutters are rare and expensive. Depending on the type of wood you use, these gutters may cost anywhere from $12 per linear foot to $20.

Vinyl and Plastic Gutters are commonly used and often sold in local hardware stores. These gutters are easy to install. You can complete a project with these materials over a weekend. Vinyl gutters do not rust or rot; however, they may crack and become very brittle in the cold weather. Most homeowners need to replace sections of the vinyl gutters after each winter. Vinyl or plastic gutters usually cost between $3 and $5 per 10 feet in length. Couplings, hangers and downspouts are additional costs.

Steel Gutters are some of the most popular gutters on the market today. Galvanized steel gutters are very economical ranging from $4 to $8 per linear foot installed. Even though steel gutters are more durable, they can rust over time. To avoid rust, purchase stainless steel gutters or make sure the steel has been dipped in an anti-rust coating. The cost of stainless steel gutters is about $20 per linear foot.

Aluminum Gutters are easy to maintain, but tend to dent more easily than other materials. Homeowners need to make sure that they clean out the aluminum gutters during the spring and fall. Excessive debris can cause these gutters to bend and create problems with diversion of water away from the home’s foundation. Aluminum gutters installed by a professional cost about $4 to $9 per foot. Downspouts are an additional $5 to $8.

Copper Gutters are low maintenance.  They do not rust and last much longer; however, they can be very expensive. They do not require any finish or preparation. These gutters should be professionally installed by a business that specializes in this type of material. Expect to pay $15 to $25 a foot for this type of material. Installation will be an additional cost.
