Propane Tank Sizes
Propane tanks come in different sizes. The size of the tank is proportional to its use. For instance, you would not use a tank with the same dimensions for a grill as you use in your lantern, or to heat your home.
Smallest Size
The smallest size of propane tank you will find is 16 ounces. You do not need to go to a special shop to buy these canisters either, because these are available in many superstores like Walmart. These tanks usually connect to small portable grills and lanterns.
Medium-Sized Tanks
A medium-sized tank ranges from 20 pounds to 150 pounds. The 20 pound to 40 pound options work well with grills and other similar devices. An RV may also use this size of tank. If you plan to use the propane for heating or cooking purposes, such as using your propane stove, you need one that is between 60 pounds to 150 pounds.
Large Tanks
Larger tanks range from 250 to 1,000 gallons. These larger tanks are used as a main source of fuel for your entire home or building. If you purchase a 250 gallon tank, it will be 92 inches in length, 30 inches in diameter and weight 485 pounds when it is full. A 500 gallon tank weighs 950 pounds with a 120-inch length and a 37-inch diameter. If you opt for a 1,000-gallon tank, your propane tank will be 190 inches in length and 41 inches in diameter. A filled 1,000 gallon tank weighs 1,750 pounds.
