Pros and Cons About a School Uniform

The debate over school uniforms will continue to exist as long as schools suggest this idea. Some people feel that uniforms take away the freedom of expression for kids while other people feel that it creates a sense of society. If you’re involved in a situation where this debate is active it’s a good idea to understand both sides.

There are a lot of arguments about the pros and cons of school uniforms. These arguments have been around since the mid 1990s. Before you decide which part of the argument you stand on it is a good idea for you to factor in both sides of the argument. Here are some of the most common arguments both for and against school uniforms.

Pros

The pros for school uniforms include the fact that students are less distracted when everybody is wearing the same thing. Students are less likely to judge another student because of the clothing they are wearing when the playing field has been leveled. There has also been evidence showing that campuses with school uniforms show less violence and tardiness to classes. When gang colors cannot be worn, their “enemies” are harder to identify. There is also less of a need to purchase a lot of school clothes when they have a uniform.

Cons

Students are at an important time in their life where they are trying to find themselves. Not being able to express themselves through their clothing can be damaging. Stifling a student’s uniqueness by making them all dress the same can prevent them from understanding who they are. There are also studies go against school uniforms causing less violence and tardiness. The cost savings argument also can go both ways. A parent will not only have to purchase the uniform for the child but also clothing that they can wear outside of school which can end up being more expensive.
