Puppy Training Tips for Border Collies
Border collies are exceptionally intelligent dogs that do not need much training as puppies. These dogs are natural born leaders, however as with any dog breed they need proper training to establish a good relationship with their owners. These tips will help you train your border collie puppy to the fullest.
Be The Leader
Every dog needs to learn who’s the boss. Since border collies have such high intelligence, they will need to know that you’re the leader so they won’t try to control you. These dogs have a high herding ability, so they need to be trained to stop and go under your orders. It can be very dangerous if they are controlling, since they will make their own rules and start chasing at anything they see.
Let the Puppy Socialize
Border collies need to interact with other animals, dogs, and people in order to be friendly and not over protective. Taking your puppy to the dog park is the best bet when it comes to socialization. You should also let them get to know your close friends and family members so they will familiarize themselves with them and not feel guarded. One important tip is to not let this get out of hand, especially if you want them to be a guard dog. Only give them proper socialization as you go on a walk with them or introduce them to family.
Use Commands
Using the same commands over and over will help the dog remember the terms even as they grow older. Border collies are fast learners if you use a soft or stern voice depending on the command. Stay steady with sayings such as “sit” and “down” or else your dog will end up confused. Keeping the same routine will be a breeze for your dog to master.
