Purpose of Adult Education Programs

The purpose of adult education programs is to deliver information and strengthen skills that will assist them in their professions and/or personal lives. Strengthening academic skills in preparation for a GED, learning basic computer skills to increase candidacy for jobs, or learning a second language are all examples of adult education programs.

  • Adult education programs take place in a variety of settings. Community colleges, community centers and alternative education programs offer classes for adults. Many adult education programs deliver instruction that assists adults to pursue a specific goal. Preparation for the workforce, higher academic learning and community involvement are potential goals of adult education programs.

  • Adults who did not graduate from high school may participate in an academic program that strengthens their basic academic skills. Generally, this type of instruction helps adults to pass GED exams, which in turn allows them entry into community college programs. Remedial academic programs for adults generally take place in high school evening classes, community centers and educational opportunity centers.

  • Another purpose of adult education programs is to deliver instruction on specific workplace and occupational skills that can strengthen any chances of being hired for a job. Basic computer skills, cosmetology classes, carpentry school and office skills courses are just a few examples of these types of programs. Many of these programs issue certificates upon completion, which can be placed on a resume and increase employment opportunities.

  • Adult education programs may also focus on preparing adults for work in other languages and cultures. Immigrants may sign up for a course in learning English in order to compete for local jobs. Some adults may be interested in working in other countries and can benefit from perfecting their mastery of another language.

  • Some programs for adults offer courses in basic life skills. These courses may include teaching adults organizational skills, basic facts about health and nutrition and sharing guidance on stress management. Such courses are generally more informal and offered as a service by community-based organizations.
