Qualifications for Jobs in Media

Getting started in the media industry may sound glamourous, but you need to know the qualifications before you start shooting off applications and resumes to the powers that be. Because there are so many jobs to choose from, each one has a separate set of qualifications and expectations.

Jobs in the media are perceived as being glamorous and many people wonder about the qualifications to be in such a field. Because there are so many jobs in the media field, it's hard to say there is one simple qualification; however, most of the jobs do require a 4-year college degree in a field such as Mass Communications, Sales, Journalism, Public Relations or Business.

Experience is also very important when finding a job in the media fields. While in college, obtain as much experience on local television and radio stations, the college newspaper and various Internet media to begin a portfolio. During the summers, you can obtain experience from local newspapers and small market television stations to pad the resume too. Don't disregard any work you may do for free, such as newsletter writing for small businesses and freelance writing assignments to gain experience.

Other qualifications for various media jobs include a working knowledge of cameras, both digital and television production, experience on sound boards, and computer knowledge including various software programs such as Word, Excel and Photoshop. For photographers, software knowledge will need to include various editing programs.

The media world has a wide variety of positions available, so if you're not qualified for one, keep looking. Be willing to start off small and learn the business to stay in the field if that's where your heart lies.
