Bipolar disorder is a disorder that is considered to be a mental mood disorder in the mental health field. Knowing what to look for can help to accurately diagnose and treat people with bipolar so that they can manage their symptoms and live a normal and productive life.

Typical Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

• People who suffer from bipolar disorder often suffer from severe mood swings. They can experience extreme highs and lows, or a combination of the two that seem to change from one moment to the next at times. Recognizing the symptoms of such mood swings is a great way to recognize a patient with bipolar disorder.


• Extreme behavior, racing thoughts and an inability to think clearly and rationally can all be signs of the manic phase of bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder can go through phases of manic episodes that last for weeks, days or even months at a time.


• Depression is another sign or bipolar, especially if it is seen in conjunction with other behaviors such as manic periods that seem to suddenly be replaced with lack of motivation, negative thoughts and other signs of depression.

Rare Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

• Bipolar disorder can also cause hallucinations during the time that their mania or depression is in full swing. They may hear voices or see things that are not really there. Many patients with this disorder will claim to see things that are not really there during an extreme manic episode.


• Patients with this disorder can often act in unusual ways such as strange movements or though patterns that have no rhyme or reason. They may be easily triggered and go into a full blown anger or rage over what seems to be nothing at all.


• During manic episodes, patients with bipolar can sometimes develop a distorted self image that makes them feel that they are a figure of importance, or that they possess special powers that everybody else does not possess.
