Rear Bumper Repair Tips
There are many ways to fix a dent or even a crack in a rear bumper and it is important to learn these specific way to repair your bumper so it will be done right the first time and not have to be redone and run in to even more money. There are two main ways to repair your rear bumper including the use of heat and the use of body filler.
Repairing with Heat
If the bumper is just dented, but has no chipped pain the easiest way to fix the dent is to remove the rear bumper from the car by locating the clips that hold the bumper to the car and using a screw driver press down in the middle of the clips unlocking them from the vehicle. Once you have the bumper off the car use heat whether it be a hair dryer or a heat gum and heat the inside of the dent. It may take anywhere from five to fifteen minutes for it to get hot enough to push the dent out. Using thick gloves and slowly push the dent out once the dent is removed replace the bumper and all the hardware.
Body Fillter
If the dent cannot be pushed out using heat, you have the choice to use body filler. Grind the dent down removing all old paint, making sure you do not push down to hard causing more damage. (This is best done while the bumper is still on the car) Once the old paint is removed from the area spread a thick layer of the body filler in and over the dent. Let the body filler dry for about an hour depending on how thick of a coat you had to apply. Once the body filler is completely dry use 120 grit sand paper and carefully sand the whole area making sure it becomes smooth and not rough.
Paint
Once you have completed the repairs, spray a thin coat of automotive primer on the areas that have been sanded. Allow the primer to dry for roughly thirty minutes. Then using automotive paint that matches your vehicle spread three or four coats of the whole area making sure to let each coat dry for at least 30 minutes between coats and then spread three or four coats of clear gloss over the paint letting the vehicle have 24 hours to fully dry before use.
