Reducing Insurance Rates with Traffic School

With the high cost of auto insurance, the use of traffic schools is allowing more drivers to reduce their insurance rates.  This allows the drivers to be educated to reduce further incidents or occurrences as well as negotiate a discount with their insurance company.  Education and a few simple steps will maximize the results.

  1. Talk to your insurance company first - While most insurance companies will allow you to attend traffic school to reduce your rates, others will only allow this for certain violations.  You need to speak with your specific insurance company and find out what their policies are and the terms of the agreement or contract pertaining to traffic school. Insurance point reduction programs are not valid in all states.

  2. Find an accredited program that offer specific insurance point reduction programs - There are many programs on the Internet and not all programs are created equal.  Some programs are specifically focused on alcohol related offenses, while others focus on moving violations.  You will want to ensure that the program you enroll in will achieve your purpose.

  3. Enroll early - There is a time limit after your violation in which to accept this option.  In most states it is eighteen months.  By enrolling early in your period of eligibility it shows the insurance company that you are sincere in your attempts to solve this problem and may give you more negotiating power.

  4. Enroll in a defensive driving course - While usually applicable to persons with certain moving violations, these programs are very useful to all drivers.  They specialize in different aspects of driving and you should attend a program that is specific to your offense.  Your insurance company will be pleased to see that you were willing to go above and beyond.

  5. Remember the terms of the agreement - The terms and agreement contained within the contract that you have with the insurance company will govern how long you have to go without another offense to keep these points permanently off your license and your savings in place.  If you have another offense within that specified time period, the insurance company will go back and award you the points that they took away along with any new points that you have earned.  This can lead to an even greater increase in your insurance or cancellation of your insurance and even your driver's license.
