Refinishing Wood Flooring
Refinishing wood flooring is much simpler than installing new floors. When hardwood flooring is cared for it can last for generations. Refinishing flooring will restore the beauty and help protect it from everyday damage. Depending on the type of flooring you have and the activity levels in your home the floors may need to be refinished every few years.
Refinishing wood flooring is something you can do on your own provided you have the right materials and some time. The process is time consuming but will give you beautiful floors that are protected from wear and tear.
Sanding
The first step in restoring your hardwood flooring is to sand the existing floor down. This will remove any finishing that is on the floor and remove small scratches and blemishes. The process can be done in just a few hours with the help of the right power tools. You should make sure the room is clear and no one will need it until after the process, as the dust can cause a lot of allergy and breathing issues.
Staining
Depending on the type of hardwood you have, you may want to apply a stain to the floor. Once the floor is sanded you have a natural grain to work with. While most people won't stain a floor, those who have light oak floors but want a darker finish may want to consider this. It does add substantial time to the overall process.
Sealing
Once the floors are sanded and stained (if necessary) you need to seal the floor. This will lock in the beauty and prevent damage. The type of sealant you use will have an effect on the time. Water based urethane sealants are clear and won't change color. They also dry in just a few hours. Oil-based urethane sealants are solvent based and can affect the color. They take 8-10 hours to dry completely. Some of these will also emit odors for a few days, so check the labels to determine if it's a good fit for you.
Wood Flooring Considerations
Some types of wood flooring will be damaged more easily than others. It can be difficult to sand soft floors. If you have soft wood, such as bamboo, it's best to hire a professional to refinish the flooring.
