Repairing Tile

Repairing tile can be a daunting task depending on how badly the tile is cracked or broken. However, sometimes, it’s not the tile that needs to be repaired but the grout that holds the tile down. Cracked grout can make your tiles look worn and broken, when in fact; it’s the material that holds the tiles together.

If you are looking for a new and interesting way to add color and creativity to your home, repairing tiles with colored putty or grout will add a spice to your home that others with the same color or style of tile as that of your home won't have. There are many different types of putty that you can use to repair your tile with, so that you can add a whole new decor to your home.

If the tile you are repairing is part of a mosaic, featuring some sort of a design, it is strongly suggested to have a professional do the work unless you did the mosaic yourself. This is because mosaic tiles are very small and the colors can be hard to match based on the brand and type of tiles that you use. Specific care should be taken when extracting the broken mosaic tile because too much agitation can break more of the tiny tiles.

When replacing ceramic tiles, all you need to do is chisel out the grout around the broken tile and use the hammer to break up the broken area. Once all the pieces are removed, new tiles can be laid down and re-grouted into place. If the problem that caused the tiles to break is something like an uneven foundation, you may end up replacing or repairing broken tiles more often than you would think unless you choose to have the house leveled.

If you are repairing marble tiles, these are the easiest to fix. Using marble repair cement, you can brush the sides you would like to adhere together and push them back into place. If you are missing a corner or there are holes and large chips in the marble, using marble repair dust will make that space look like it was never even broken. This is an easy option that many people like because it saves them the cost of buying a whole new tile, which can be very expensive.

Sometimes it is not the tile that is broken but the grout that surrounds it. It is most easy to replace the grout than the tile itself. Using a chisel and a hammer to drive it in, chipping out the old grout is easy. Once all of the broken cement or grout has been removed and brushed away, it can be refilled. As an added flair, there are several colors that grout comes in so you can recreate the entire space by changing the grout color or adding things to it like metallic flecks, or glitter. Repairing the grout will also make your tiles look fresher because there is nothing around them that is unsightly or an eyesore.

No matter what type of tile that you have, repairing it will make your home look nicer and your space look more unified. If cracks are left in the flooring, they could spread farther into the flooring or they could cause accidents in the house like trips and falls. Food will be less likely to fall into the cracks of the broken tile making it less likely that you will get pests in your home.
