Repairing a Clogged Drainage System
If your drainage system has become clogged you may be worried that you will need to hire an expensive plumber to come out to your home and perform the needed repairs to get your plumbing back in working order. This is not always the case. There are ways that you can unclog your drainage system yourself that will save you a lot of money over the expensive fees that most plumbers charge for their services.
- Salt - Table salt is a great natural alternative to commercial drain cleaners that can often be powerful enough to clear a clog in your drainage system. Boil a large pot of water on your stove until it comes to a rolling boil, and then remove the pot from your heat source. Add one-cup of table salt to the water, and then stir the salt into the water until it is thoroughly dissolved in your water. Carefully pour the salt water mixture into your drain to aid in removing any debris that is stuck in your drainage system.
- Cola - If you have a clog in your drainage system, common cola is a great choice for an earth-friendly drain cleaning option. Most brands of cola contain a chemical called phosphoric acid which is known to be powerful enough to clear a clog or blockage in your drainage system. Add a two-liter of cola into the affected drain and allow it to sit overnight. Wash it through your drainage system with hot water in the morning to flush out the source of your clog as well as any remaining chemicals.
- Snake Auger - If you have a problem with a clog in your drainage system, a plumber's snake is a great way to clear the clog without the assistance of a plumber. You can purchase a snake auger from your local home improvement store fairly inexpensively. This long metal rod is inserted into the clogged drain to apply pressure to the source of the clog. Remove the snake auger and run hot water through your drainage system once the clog has been removed to flush the debris from your drainage system.
