How to Become a Business Consultant

Requirements of Security Consulting

A security consultant can refer to a consultant in many specialties, even though it generally means a consultant who specializes in information technology. The professional is able to create and implement a security system that serves the needs of a client.

Responsibilities

A security consultant implements and manages information encryption systems for clients. The consultant has to interview different heads of departments with the client's business to figure out the company's needs. When a security plan is designed, it is set and maintained by the consultant's business or company. Occasional server maintenance and research on adding data security is a part of their daily job function. A security consultant can also work with other project managers to make sure the operating costs fit within the firm's budget.

Knowledge

Tremendous knowledge of data encryption, design and maintenance of databases is essential. The consultant must have knowledge of performance tuning views, indexes, SQL and PLSQL. The minimum programming languages required are C++, scripting, HTML and web-based languages. The security consultant also has to have knowledge of virus and worm defense, as well as creating a WiFi security system.

Education and Experience

A bachelor's degree in management information systems or computer science is a requirement. The highly qualified job applicants have specific data encryption training or certification from the International Association of Professional Security Consultants. To get certification, the applicant must have three years of security experience, classroom training, and earn a passing score on the certification exam. Previous experience in security intelligence, data encryption, analytics or information management systems is a requirement as well.
