Residential Garage Door Sizes
The increasing size of today's most popular vehicles has required manufacturers to produce larger garage doors to accommodate these vehicles. You can purchase varying door sizes for your home garage. Most manufacturers offer the same standard size doors; however, if you cannot find a door to meet your needs, you might want to contact different companies to see what they have to offer.
How to Determine the Door Size That You Need
In order to determine what size garage door you need to purchase, first measure the width of your garage opening, then measure the height. Garage door dimensions are given in width first, then height. For example, 12 feet width by 7 feet height. If you are unsure of your measurements, contact a garage door distributor. They often offer free estimate services, where you will be able to have a contractor come to your house and take the appropriate measurements.
Single Car Garage Doors
These are the most common garage doors that are found in residential garages. As the name suggests, these doors fit one-car garages. Single car doors come in varying sizes. Among the available sizes are 8 by 7 feet, 9 by 7 feet and 10 by 7 feet. You can also find single doors in 8-feet lengths with widths ranging from 8 to 10 feet. Custom doors can be created with shorter lengths where they are required.
Double Car Garage Doors
Double car garage doors are manufactured to allow two cars to enter and exit a garage, side by side. These doors have a wider width than their single car counterparts. In general, double car garage doors come in these standard sizes: 12 by 7 feet, 14 by 7 feet, 16 by 7 feet and 18 by 7 feet. They are also available in 8-feet lengths, with widths ranging from 12 to 18 feet. As with single car garage doors, you can order double car garage doors in standard widths with a shorter length if you require.
Golf Cart Doors
Golf cart garage doors are smaller than traditional garage doors. The standard sizes for golf cart doors are 5 by 7 feet, 6 by 7 feet, 5 by 8 feet and 6 by 8 feet. As with the other garage doors that are available to purchase, you can find a garage door with a shorter length if you need one to fit your garage.
