What Is a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?

Rigid Sigmoidoscopy Procedures

Rigid Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that is done to look at the rectum and the lower portion of the colon.  A scope with a light on the end contains a piece of see-through glass so the physician can look inside.  Some reasons to perform the procedure include finding the cause of rectal bleeding and to remove a tissue sample for biopsy.

Four Days Before the Procedure

Four to five day before the procedure the doctor may ask the patient to refrain from taking some medications that can interfere.  Purchase a rectal fleet enema at your local pharmacy.  Ask a friend or family member to drive you to the clinic, as it is inadvisable to drive yourself back from the appointment.

The Evening Before the Procedure

Give yourself an enema but be sure to ask your doctor if you should perform the enema the night before or during the morning of the procedure.  Use some KY jelly if you have trouble inserting the enema into your rectum.  Be sure to eat a light and healthy breakfast low in fat such as oatmeal and juice before your appointment.

After the Procedure

Be sure to take plenty of rest following the procedure to allow yourself to heal.  Although you may pass some air or gas, there is no reason for alarm.  Because this is an inpatient procedure, you may need to remain in a hospital or treatment center overnight.

Call Your Physician Immediately If:

  • Your vomit contains bile (smells like stool) or blood.

  • You feel like, but are unable to pass a bowel movement.

  • Your abdomen feels hard to the touch.
